Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the most amazing students in the world; however, they are struggling with the coronavirus pandemic. Many of my students have or have had the virus and thus, cannot do their remote learning. They are sad, exhausted, drained, and suffering. Unfortunately, we have had a number of parents who have succumbed to the virus, and my colleagues and I are doing everything we can to support these students, both emotionally and otherwise by sending food and anything we can get our hands on. My students are from low income housing, and many are stuck in an apartment, with one laptop that the school has provided to them. Some students don't have internet and are sending their work in by handwriting it and taking pictures. They have to share laptops with their siblings and even help their siblings with homework. My students are also the caretakers of the family and are home while their parents are making ends meet. This is a scary and depressing time, especially for the students whose only escape from their home lives is school. My Project
These materials will help my students because many of my students are afraid to leave their houses. Most have not gone outside since the start of the pandemic. By giving students games, such as cards, Uno, and coloring books, they will have something to do, other than worry about what is going on around them. They need a distraction from all the bad. Journals will give them an outlet to voice their concerns, struggles, and feelings. They will learn how to express their emotions, which is a major focus in my lessons. Socio-emotional health is so important as well as creativity, which is why these materials will help students at home. I had journals in my classroom locker that my students wrote in daily; however, they are stuck there. My students LOVE journaling and expressing their thoughts on paper. Please help me get these resources into their hands, as they really need them right now to cope, especially those who need extra socio-emotional support and love.
