My Students
I teach at a very good school with wonderful kids. Unfortunately, not all my students have all the supplies they need. Each year I have 10-15 students who can't afford basic supplies like paper, pencils, scissors. I try to "slip" them supplies so their peers don't notice. Please help me help them.
My kids are awesome!
They are bright, polite and full of potential. I get excited just being in the room with them. The majority of them honestly want to learn. The balance may not WANT to be in school but at least they "get" that their future is dependent on an education.
My Project
I teach World History 2 and we use Interactive Notebooks. INBs are student created "text" books. All their notes, activities, assignments and maps are carefully organized and summarized in unit sections for ease of reference. This style of learning is active rather than passive. The students are actually creating their own reference materials, interacting with them rather than passively referring to pre-made materials.
I believe this project is important because it allows my disadvantaged students to have their own supplies rather than sharing the "class set." By removing any stigma that may be attached to having to borrow materials, students can focus entirely on the primary objective - learning.
