My students need pencils and erasers so they can complete their writing and math assignments. It seems ridiculous to stay in the 21st century but they need these essential, basic supplies in order to succeed.
Joyce Myers once said that a #2 pencil and a dream can take you anywhere.
My 5th and 6th grade students have the dreams but they don't have pencils. This means every day we waste valuable learning time searching for broken pencils .
My students attend a small, urban K-6 public school that is over 30 years old. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Many students are military dependents. Over 65% of our students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch but we are not Title I.
We lack the resources of many high poverty schools. My students do not have the funds for necessary school supplies and our school does not have the budget to provide pencils and erasers. My students do not stand a chance without essential supplies.
My Project
Every week I teach 29 students in 5th and 6th grade. Each week, during the year, it becomes increasingly difficult to teach because my students do not have the necessary supplies to do their work. They have no pencils. They cannot afford them. My class has a significant number of at-risk students and they’re lives are further complicated because in addition to lacking adequate access to 21st century technology, they don’t have access to 19th century technology.
My students can’t write, take notes or complete math assignments because they do not have pencils. My students desperately need pencils and erasers so they can complete their assignments. I am asking for one dozen pencils per student and one eraser.
This is not a flashy project--it is very basic and very much needed.
My students have a dream but they are in danger of missing out because they don’t have pencils and erasers.
This is a tragedy that can be averted with the help of donors. The impact of your donation will be immediate and long lasting. My students will know that someone cares about their success.
