Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fortunate to teach some of the most curious English Language Learners from Kindergarten through Fifth grade. My students and their amazing families come from various countries such as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Mexico, Honduras, and various parts of Africa. Their unique experiences with multiculturalism and bilingualism truly allows for them to create a space where unity outweighs the divisiveness they see in our country today.
In this class, we build a community around what we have in common, share our experiences that make us different and accept that we can learn something from everyone's journey.
My multilingual rock stars are focused on developing their English language proficiency through developing a love for literacy. The acquisition of their second and sometimes even third language is heavily influenced on their exposure to new and familiar worlds. Literature opens the door to those worlds. My mission is to highlight what connects us all as human beings and show my students that the world is theirs to explore.
My Project
This project is aimed to introduce thematic literature into this ever growing ESL classroom. The success my students have achieved in understanding new and unfamiliar concepts as a result of listening to read aloud is astonishing. Listening to the stories allow for students to learn new words and phrases in English that they then use in conversation practice; and the pictures allow for students to make meaning of what they are listening to.
Literature is key in building understanding which is key in building language.
That is what this project will do. Having access to multiple books within the same theme will allow for these amazing multilingual learners to acquire key vocabulary while simultaneously build up their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
