Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I teach are as diverse as our school district. Anchorage has been ranked as the most diverse district in the nation more than once! These young people come with such overwhelming curiosity it can be hard to contain our lessons in the classroom. Many of the students already speak two languages and love the idea of learning another. Some of them are heritage speakers of Spanish and appreciate a place to shine with their knowledge and fluency in a way they may not be able to in other classes. We are a small elementary school of roughly 220 students all of whom I get the privilege to work with on language acquisition.
Learning Spanish is not all tacos and guacamole, it is a deep reflection on one's culture, one's language, and the history of migration around the world.
I am so grateful to ignite and continue to fuel the curiosity of my students to better understand their world. Bilingualism allows students to be more flexible thinkers, more empathic to others and themselves, and it invites students to think of the world as accessible not foreign.
My Project
This project is about starting listening stations for my students. These materials will help students have some independent listening experiences with classic texts. With these tools, I will also be able to expand our listening library by creating future recordings of classroom text for students to explore.
Listening to a story read aloud while following along to the written and beautifully illustrated text brings the language alive.
I am excited to bring these tools into the classroom and create learning centers for students to work more independently with the language. This will allow me more direct time with students in the center with me and students more agency when working in peer groups. We have made a great deal of progress in the last few years and I think we are ready for this jump!
