My Students

As librarians, we serve the entire school so we have the ability to reach all populations in our building. Our school is located near the heart of Raleigh, NC and serves a diverse population of races, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

As part of the library program, we strive to create critical-thinkers and problem solvers.

Breaking the mold of students' ideas of what a library could be is our goal. We are not just the keepers of books; we are the purveyors of knowledge. Our goal is to create life-long readers but also thinkers.

My Project

Capturing high school students' attention is harder and harder these days. Teachers must compete with technology and all the "flashy" videos and social media. Frankly, it is hard to impress a teenager enough to get them excited and fully engaged in a lesson. Creating challenging and interactive lessons is one way to do this.

Through Breakout EDU's "escape room" kits, teachers have the materials (lock boxes, cue cards, various locks, etc.) along with access to a library 800+ games that utilize these tools and can be adapted to the classroom.

These games challenge the students to think through problems and learn material through hands-on experience instead of passively sitting in their seats. Also, the competitive nature of the breakouts appeal to the students and create urgency to work and think quickly and critically.
