Within our school, we have a diverse population of students who face challenges with many social issues: mental health, socioeconomic, racial, gender/sexual orientation, and many more. Through literature we can open discussion of these issues with a diverse population and begin to understand our own issues as well as the issues of others. The two novels address these issues: All American Boys (race issues in America) and Turtles All the Way Down (mental health-anxiety and OCD). Our goal is to create small book clubs within each lunch period to read current, culturally-relevant literature in small groups to allow deep discussion of the social issue addressed in the book. As a side effect, we hope this brings students back to the enjoyment of reading as they see books that speak to them and their situations. At the end of the book club, we will be able to transfer these book sets to our English department to supplement their classic literature with more current, culturally-relevant titles for their classrooms.
