My struggling readers find technology fascinating, but they want nothing to do with old-fashioned books. I recently brought my personal Kindle in, and they haven't stopped talking about it. They argue that they would get so much more out of our reading program if they had Kindles, too! :)
My 8th grade students are some of the most wonderful kids you'll ever meet.
They live in a poverty-stricken city, ripe with gangs and violence, and attend a Title 1 school. You can't image what these students have been though. Most of them are overage and at risk of never graduating from middle or high school. And yet, they are some of the smartest and most endearing kids I've ever encountered. They have so much potential. I've been blessed this year.
My Project
My students are all working hard this year to raise their reading levels and go on to high school with old resources (a difficult task, as most of these students read at fourth and fifth grade levels). Our school is participating in a program called the "100 Book Challenge" this year. Students are required to read for 1.5 hours a day and keep a journal.
The 100 Book Challenge is a phenomenal program, but so far, it's been a struggle, as our school lacks the funding to buy new, high-interest, engaging books. Our books are old and tattered, and besides, our students have no interest in picking up old-fashioned books! They live in a new era. They want Kindles!
With Kindles in the classroom, students who normally don't have access to technology will gain it. They will become more engaged and excited about learning, and develop a newfound appreciation for reading. They will be able to master the NYS Common Core Standards, pass the 8th Grade ELA Exam, and go on to high school!
Do you remember what it was like to get excited about a school project or activity?
Many of my students have never experienced that feeling. It's their turn! With Kindles in the classroom, my students will be engaged, enthusiastic, and one step closer to stepping out of poverty. Thank you for your help!
