Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a teacher handing you a bamboo scroll and expecting you to read it. What if, instead, it was a rolled up strap of leather? Parchment? Students today do not want to read books. But they will read just about anything on a screen.

Hollenbeck Middle School serves a low-income, high crime area in East Los Angeles.

We are a Title I school, with a large percentage of our students reading well below grade level. The students are imaginative, and vivacious, but have grown up on technology, and disdain reading traditional books. Their need to improve their reading skills is critical, but opportunities to do so are limited to Internet research. Yet they have trouble accessing the meaning of the texts they find on the internet. They are caught between a demand to score well on grade level tests, and District-mandated curriculum that is not designed to address their individual reading needs.

My Project

Many of my students are embarrassed to be seen reading books that are written at their level, which is often three or four years below their reading level. They therefore refuse to read. A digital reader will permit them to read exactly the books that are leveled to their needs without the public announcement that an eighth grader is reading a third grade level book. Students can improve their reading as individuals during independent reading time, gain access to the worlds available to them in books, and avoid any of the stigmas they fear will come if their peers see how low their reading level is.

This project can provide many 14 year olds with an opportunity to improve their reading that they might otherwise never access.

By respecting their privacy and fulfilling their needs, we can change their lives by helping them become better readers on their own terms.
