Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am writing on behalf of the students at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology's two Advanced Placement Biology classes. The Advanced Placement Biology class contains 55 of the brightest and most dedicated high school juniors and seniors I know. We are a school with limited resources who would like to offer students challenging laboratory experiences to support learning of complex concepts. We are looking for funding to purchase materials for a series of experiments that will help us better understand the concept of cellular respiration. We would like to purchase two laboratory kits (one for each class) that will allow us to see that all organisms including plants undergo cellular respiration. We would do this using an instrument called a respirometer to measure how different environmental factors effect cellular respiration. The respirometer will measure the amount of oxygen used by the organisms we study. Hopefully by having hands on experience students will relate their experience in that laboratory to the concepts they learn in the classroom. This is a laboratory requirement for the College Board's Advanced Placement Biology test given in May. By completing this lab we are better preparing students for the test so that they will have the opportunity to earn college credits. This experience will help students understand concepts better and prepare them for college.
