Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a high crime area in New York City. Their community faces enormous obstacles such as obesity, homelessness, teen pregnancy and drug abuse. However, my sixth and seventh graders are using perseverance, optimism, and determination to propel themselves away from these dire circumstances. My students represent an ethnically diverse population. Many suffer from low self-esteem, body image issues, and low motivation. I believe that social-emotional support decreases behavioral challenges and mental negativity.
My wish is to teach them how to love themselves.
My Project
When a scholar comes to school hungry or lacking basic clothing they cannot focus. The lack of focus manifests itself in a number of counterproductive ways, that impede the scholars' learning. Having access to clothing and foods would greatly assist me in working with my students who require help by giving them the option. It would also allow for an immediate plan of action when teachers or administrators reach out for resources like clean pants, a warm sweater on a rainy day or food for a scholar who came in hungry. This is my vision for creating an equal opportunity day for all my students.
