Epidemiologists in Action Hands-on STEM

My Students

I teach students who are identified as talented and gifted in a suburban school. My students come from a wide variety of economic backgrounds. Approximately half of the students are Caucasian, and the other half are Asian, Hispanic and African-American. These students leave their regular education classes one full day each week and come to my room to receive enrichment and challenge activities. The areas of concentration are social studies and science infused with critical-thinking activities, creative problem-solving exercises, and advanced research techniques.

Gifted students must not be overlooked because they can "get by" without much assistance, but they must be challenged in order to reach their true potential.

My job is essential in providing an academically aligned education for these advanced students, as well as to teach these bright students skills they will need in their careers and lives, to meet their social and emotional needs, and to keep them engaged in school so they don’t drop out.

My Project

Fifth grade students will be participating in a project called "Epidemic." Students are tasked with being real-world epidemiologists who investigate the problems of germs, diseases, and epidemics as well as devise and implement solutions for healthier environments, both in the school and in the local community.

In order to take on the role of real-world epidemiologists, students must have access to supplies used in scientific investigations.

Many of these are consumable and, therefore, cannot be used year to year. Supplies include Nutrient Agar Kit, sterile petri dishes, Glo Germ and other important items.

In this project, students will be able to view bacteria growth in a variety of places. They will work with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to track the spread of the flu and to educate the public on ways to prevent transmission. Students will become change agents in the school and local community to slow the spread of harmful bacteria, germs, and disease.
