This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hi! I am currently preparing for my second year as a 3rd grade teacher at Miramonte Elementary in the South Central area of Los Angeles. I am hoping, with your help, to get each one of my incoming students their own copies of Charlotte's Web to start the school year. In order to continue to improve my instruction and the strength of my student's elementary education, I am reflecting on the successes and weaknesses of last school year. I plan to recreate, tweak, and modify several units that my students most enjoyed. Without a doubt, our “Charlotte's Web” unit was the favorite among my former students! Because of the generosity of a DonorsChoose donor, each one of my students owned their own copies of the story this past year. For many of them, this was the first book that was truly theirs. They were so proud of their books and the success they had with them. Over the course of the unit we used the story for readers' theater, to do book reports, to make dioramas, to study spiders, and even to diagram sentences. They would insist on carrying their copies to and from school each day, so that they could read and reread the story (It seemed that they also liked to show off their chapter books!). By years end, many of my students had read the story two to three times. As a whole, they enjoyed this story more than any other we read this year. My lowest reader doubled her fluency score during this unit because she wanted to have full access to the story. I had been trying all year to invest her in her reading. I saw her enthusiasm towards reading and her self-confidence soar as we delved further into the story. She was determined to be able to read it on her own, and she did exactly that. I want to give an equally rich and engaging Language Arts experience to my incoming third graders. I want each of them to have their very own copies of Charlotte's Web to read, analyze, and love. Many of my incoming students came into my room this year, as second graders, to look at our "Charlotte's Web Diorama Museum". They could hardly wait for third grade so that they too could read Charlotte's Web, and take part in all that went along with it. Additionally, I would like to get an audiocassette to go along with the books for students to use at the listening center. This center is always a favorite, and has proven to help improve both reading comprehension and fluency, and is especially helpful for my English Language Learners.
