Enriching the Environmental Camp Experience

My Students

Each year we have a camp Olympics and game night that encourages students to work together to complete fun tasks. It is a class bonding experience. We have always tried to supplement these activities with prizes for students, many of whom can not afford them on their own.

Our school is highly diverse, often in one classroom there are more than 10 languages spoken.

Our school is also a high needs school that hovers right around 70% free and reduced lunch. Our 6th grade students go to camp a the beginning of the school year and for many this is the only time they go to an overnight camp so we work hard to make sure it is not only educational but a fun experience they will never forget.

My Project

You will probably notice that most of this list of materials is sports equipment, learning kits, and games. Students are able to take these "prizes" and continue to build relationships with classmates which develops learning relationships and increases a support system in the school academic setting. It is also fun for students and makes a very memorable camp experience.

This project is important as it helps us to encourage students to build positive relationships with other students and provides additional learning opportunities even after camp has ended.
