I invite you to join an exciting endeavor: an opportunity to help create a String Ensemble at Beacon School in New York City.
Beacon High School's blossoming music program is currently adding a string ensemble. We are fortunate to have renowned cellist Sean Grisson instruct our diverse group of talented musicians. Our goal is to add players each year, while simultaneously acquiring additional instruments. We are requesting a donation of a 630 Klaus Mueller Cello.
A fundamental tenet of our program is that we take small steps and do things right. We are building our program with a solid foundation with an emphasis on bridging the gaps between people of all backgrounds. The Cello will most certainly help expose our players, and our entire student body, to the sounds of jazz, classical, and Cajun music.
Beacon's music program has come a long way. In 2001, we received a donation of 6 instruments (2 guitars, 2 basses, 1 drum set, and 1 keyboard) and 3 amplifiers. Immediately we began encouraging students with musical interest to formulate collaborative bands and then provided them with after-school instruction, practice space, and monthly performance opportunities.
In 2003, after receiving numerous requests from students for additional study and performance opportunities, the Beacon School Community decided to begin creating a permanent music program. We now offer one class of Guitar: Theory and Performance, and one class of Music Theory. We offer Chorus as an after-school activity. There are currently 15 active bands - styles ranging from rock, punk, metal, to jazz - that play, practice, and perform regularly. Music has been the conduit for much collaboration, consciousness building, open-mindedness, and trust between music players and music appreciators.
Our students have worked hard to move this program forward by playing an active role in formulating ideas and fundraising for new instruments. Likewise, your donation will become a 'permanent' part of our program and will surely reach the lives of many students for years to come. The Cello will help anchor our new ensemble- and will most certainly help our community grow in positive and enriching ways.
Lastly, we would like to celebrate the end of our first 'ensemble year' with a school performance, one we hope that our donor(s) will be able to attend so they may enjoy the benefit of their generosity.
