Please give my remarkable students the opportunity to easily share their work! I teach Algebra, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus AB at a small urban charter school. My 9th though 12th grade students are predominantly people of color, many of whom overcome enormous challenges just to get to school every day. Our school’s mission is to serve our diverse population and prepare all students for college. In our math department, the focus is on teaching abstract concepts through engaging activities in real world contexts. We train our students to work collaboratively, support each other, and take pride in their learning. I believe that students benefit from explaining their ideas and hearing others’ thoughts in a classroom that is rich with mathematical discussion. Therefore, there are daily student presentations and explanations of work, from small warm-up problems to the deeper results of our guided explorations. I love watching them demonstrate what they have learned and teach each other through sharing their work. However, I dislike watching the time pass by as the class waits for the presenters to copy the work from their paper onto the board or overhead. Because of the inadequacies of math education in many of our city’s middle and elementary schools, I need to use every minute of class time to my students’ full advantage. As a school that has chosen to have small, personalized classes, we often don't have the budget to buy all the classroom supplies our students deserve. My school can’t afford to buy the document camera and projector that would give my students back those 10 to 15 lost minutes of every class period. So I have come to ask for your help. A document camera and projector will enrich my students’ experiences by giving them the tools they need to share their work and engage each other in discussion and debate about the concepts we are learning. As an additional benefit, students will also be pushed to improve their written mathematical communication skills. They will soon learn that all their work must be well-presented and clear, because at any moment, they might need to put it in the document camera and explain their thinking so that everyone can understand. Of course, while I need the projector to use the document camera, I will also be able to use it for many other activities. I have observed that my students are much more engaged and retain knowledge better when using technology in the math classroom. With a projector, students can present their knowledge not only on paper, but also through multi-media presentations. There are many concepts that cannot be adequately demonstrated on a whiteboard, and I would also be able to use the projector to share 3-D and animated models of rate of change, volume, etc. Your generous support will give my students the ability to instantly share and discuss work, more time to spend on the engaging activities so they can develop a deep understanding of the math, and a sense of accountability to themselves and their classmates to communicate their ideas thoroughly. They will improve in math and continue to advance along the road to college!
