This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a diverse learning community of students in grades, PreK-7th in two different schools in the same district. My 50+ students range in age from pre-kindergarten (age 3) to 7th grade.
My students have varied degrees of speech-language delays/disabilities.
Many of them have significant special needs, including autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional/behavioral disabilities, and physical/cognitive disabilities. Many have very limited verbal output, and some do not speak at all and some even require other modes of communication including PECs Boards. Many students have difficulty with social situations which puts them at a disadvantage when learning or forming peer relationships. Some of my students require a special education room all day in order to meet their needs. Because many of my students have diverse needs, I work closely with our Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Special Education and General Education Teachers. Approximately 30% of our students have a limited English proficiency and ore than 50% are economically disadvantaged. Our students, staff, parents, and community are valued, involved, and invested in the success of our school and strive for high-quality instruction for all.
My Project
These materials will make a difference with my student's as it makes the environment fun and engaging. By incorporating different card games and different board games it teaches the students how to take their turn, how to play appropriately with different games and also learning the rules of the games. When a student leaves the session they are provided with different tactics to incorporate different games, activities and strategies so their new found skills in speech can be generalized in the home environment. My student's love for new activities and games will encourage them to actively participate in speech.
