Team Wisdom is comprised of an amazing group of students. The kiddos come to class ready to learn. I love providing them with as many resources as possible to enrich and deepen their horizons.
Having scientific calculators will support many of the units we study in 7th Grade Math.
Working with exponents, radicals and many other problem solving experiences would benefit from using a calculator. When students do not have to worry about computation mistakes, they can focus on reasoning and problem solving. I can help students solve complex problems, like those encountered in daily life, through the structured use of calculators. The idea of getting a student to solve a difficult problem from start to finish without making a mistake, can be almost impossible for some students. I would like them all to have a fair playing field and understand the difficult concepts, rather than check their facts skills each time they perform math operations. Both the SAT and ACT now allow students to use calculators during testing, as do many state-level exams, but if students are not comfortable using calculators, this can actually hurt them in the long run.
Having access to a scientific calculator will give students the chance to learn all the functions that are useful in daily life and in their academic life. This will set them up for success in areas of testing and daily financial math tasks. Students will learn when it is necessary to use a calculator and when mental math, or paper math would be the preferred method. Students will become more comfortable in problem solving and know when to use a calculator and when not to use it. They will become familiar with the functions of a calculator and will hopefully help to improve their skills.
