My Students

Our school is located in a high-poverty, rural community. Our students love hands-on activities. They are very energetic and need to get up and get moving on a daily basis. As a teacher in a low-income district, where many of our children live in single-parent households and receive a free or reduced-price lunch, I know that it is imperative to try to provide the best experiences for my students in the classroom as well as out of the classroom.

Since our students are young learners, we try and make our classroom as warm and welcoming as possible and also provide a very rigorous learning environment for them.

We want each and every one of them to have the best educational advantage a young learner can possibly have. The students live in a digital world and thrive with hands-on activities. Traditional teaching does not work anymore. Students are energetic and need to get up and get moving throughout the school day. Creating environments to be able to meet all the needs of students, in a variety of ways, is crucial for our students to master concepts and be successful.

My Project

We currently have a space in our school that we call the "Innovation Station." Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the Innovation Station that works for them. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.

I have seen how choice can positively affect students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us to all grow even more! By using tables, wobble seats, chair cushions and other options will help our classroom be as successful as possible.

Another item that I am requesting is, playdough. Playdough play brings many possibilities and supports development and learning in many ways. They can use their imagination and express their ideas through art and make believe play. It also helps children build their vocabulary as they explain what they are doing. Young children love playing with playdough.

They can roll, squish, scupt, and mold it. I can just imagine my future students seeing the playdough and getting excitied about it. I know that they would want to create things that they know about and share it to the group that will enhace their social skills.

Lastly, I am requesting a Hop Scotch Carpet. I can place these around the play area to create different and fun activities for my students. We will use this carpet in conjunction with our BeeBot robots.

As we navigate this very different school year these materials will help us give students a fun learning environment.
