My Project

These days, high school students are all about technology from cell phones, laptops, and tablets. It is hard to motivate non-disabled students to learn math concepts, but it is especially hard for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities do not want to be singled out, making small group instruction difficult. Using tablets will motivate the students to want to participate in small group instruction.

As a special education teacher in a low income area, I go in math classrooms to provide additional support to students with disabilities.

My goal is to use tablets to increase their skills in math. Students with disabilities perform far below average on classroom assessments and standardized tests. The use of tablets will help bridge the gap and put theses students on a level playing field. Tablets will make learning math fun! Instead of resistance to small group instruction, students will be eager to join. They will get the extra support they need to be successful in the general education setting. In addition, the use of the tablets will increase students' learning gains on standardized tests.

I have found when students get confused on a question or subject, many retreat and continue to fall behind out of fear of embarrassment. These are fragile souls who just want the chance to do well. If my students could have access to these tablets, they can escape the stigma of their iniquities and thrive in an environment that will encourage learning, not discourage it.

A UNC study showed a marked increase in kids with learning disabilities such as ASD, poor IQ, anxiety and engagement issues when given advance technology. The spell check and proof reading apps alone would help. I want to give my students the best chance for success, and these tablets will make all the difference!
