This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a second-grade teacher at a Title I school in Queens, I am dedicated to providing my students with the best learning environment possible. My goal is to improve the quality of our phonics instruction through the addition of a classroom rug and an easel. Phonics is a foundational skill that helps young readers decode words and build fluency. These tools will create a more engaging and interactive space for our learners, ultimately enhancing their reading skills and fostering a love for learning.
To facilitate effective instruction, it’s essential for students to be close together during lessons.
A comfortable rug will allow my students to sit together in a cozy learning area, promoting collaboration and discussion.
With the new rug, students will be able to easily engage in think-pair-share conversations, sharing their thoughts with peers and participating more actively in group discussions. This proximity not only encourages communication but also helps me monitor their engagement and understanding more effectively.
Additionally, the rug will provide a much-needed break for the students from sitting at their desks all day. By incorporating a designated space for phonics instruction on the rug, I can create a dynamic environment where students feel comfortable and motivated to learn.
The easel will further enhance our phonics lessons by allowing me to display important information, share visuals, and conduct interactive activities. This will make the learning process more hands-on and engaging, catering to various learning styles in my classroom.
