Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have begun a 1:1 iPad initiative to provide a 21st century learning environment. iPads differentiate, provide additional learning opportunities and motivate. Our challenge is our students lack the fine motor skills to maximize their experience with the iPad.

Monticello has a 60% free and reduced lunch rate.

In poverty school provides our students with all of their experiences. They attend a K-5 in the inner city area with only a 30% success rate in Math and ELA. The inclusion of the iPads has given them a non-threatening and student centered approach to instruction. We have begun to see student success rising.

My Project

We are asking for a simple addition to our students experiences. They say that using the iPad is great but drawing, writing, and manipulating characters is frustrating and it slows them down. Our teachers have worked hard to integrate not in every subject. We have the apps, instructional alignment, and support. The stylus and stand will help them to target work and keep them focused on the task. In a high poverty school our students oftentimes are not able to get all of the tools they need as other schools do. Parents cannot participate in purchasing supplies as they are not using it at home or seeing the value yet. We want our students to have those equal opportunity. It is a simple addition to their day that will make their work look more professional, understandable, easier to read, and less frustrating. We are working hard to integrate the iPads into art and music. A stylus and stand have become a necessity.

This project is so important because the activities that the students are required to complete can be more focused.

Their fingers are too big to draw graphs and become detailed as they integrate the iPads into their daily curriculum including art and music. The need to "start over again" because of a "sloppy" (the student words) product will give them pride.
