Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning a brand new language is not easy - just ask my second graders who are being instructed in English for the very first time in their educational careers this year! It can be discouraging and overwhelming when reading and studying vocabulary for the first time, but we have a solution!
Our students come from low-income neighborhoods in Kansas City and often lack books and school resources both at home and within their classrooms.
It can be daunting to be immersed into a new language; however, by using puzzle, riddle and picture books, my students feel positively challenged and engaged in learning new vocabulary - rather than discouraged. I Spy Phonics and Alphabet books are a great platform for developing critical thinking skills, sight words and vocabulary foundations for our classroom. Not only will they be effective in helping our class grow in reading and writing, they will find them fun and enjoyable as well.
My Project
In order to best help our English Language Learners Succeed in our classrooms, we must provide engaging, authentic, approachable and tangible content.
Even the highest level of enthusiasm for learning can be thwarted with tedious tasks that are beyond the student's level of capability. Therefore, it is important that teachers differentiate tasks, taking into consideration what educational philosopher John Dewey suggested long ago: that we begin where the students are, not where we would like them to be. Engagement and the use of visuals is key because once the language barrier becomes frustrating, students are much less likely to feel up to the challenge. Therefore, through I-Spy Phonics, our classroom can further develop their vocabularies, questioning abilities, and also their concrete operational skills according to Piaget. Possibly the most power will lie in the ability to create a captivating structure for reading and give the child the reigns for their own literacy growth.
This project will help our classroom further our motivation and desire to learn.
By engaging them and giving them the resources they otherwise would not have exposure to, students will more quickly learn English language sight words and vocabulary, which will establish the foundation for their fluency and language development. Not only will they increase proficiency, they will absolutely have fun while doing so, which is so important when trying to cultivate a long-term love of learning.
