English Language Biology Students Need Help!

My Students

Imagine trying to learn about DNA and protein synthesis in a foreign language. These concepts are difficult enough for high school students to understand who were born and raised in the United States.

My students are English Language Learners who have been in the United States less than five years.

Most of them have been here two years or less. All are still learning the English language. Most of my students are very low level language learners. Some are at very low levels in their first language, as far as literacy, as well. Some of my students are Newcomer students, meaning they have just arrived in the United States very recently and have very little command of the English language. They attend a large, urban public high school with a wide diversity of students. Many are struggling with the challenges of language acquisition and learning difficult subject matter. Although some are quite successful, many need a great deal of help in order to succeed.

My Project

Imagine trying to read a textbook in a language you don't fully understand, listen to a teacher who you don't fully understand, and write and take tests in a language you are still learning. Then, try to learn a very complex and difficult subject in that language! The concept of DNA structure and replication as well as protein synthesis is a topic that is a state standard which students will be tested on at the end of the year on the standardized tests. Native English speakers have difficulty with such an abstract subject. Working with objects they can manipulate and see is the key to understanding such topics. Students need to see, touch, and work with models of DNA, to simulate DNA replication and protein synthesis. My students need these DNA, RNA-Protein Synthesis kits to help them in understanding very difficult and abstract concepts. By using these DNA structure, replication, and protein synthesis kits, student understanding will increase.

My students' self esteem will rise as they experience the success these resources will bring.

Many of my students experience a great deal of academic failure and, as a result, become disengaged and disinterested in school. These kits will provide a fun way to learn a difficult subject, increase their interest and motivation, and help these students succeed!
