English Language Arts, Math and Tactile Fine Motor Centers

Help me give my students tactile experience while building and using their fine motor skills, and keeping them engaged while sharpening their English Language Arts and Math abilities during center rotations.

My Students

All students are diverse and energetic 5 and 6 year olds in a southern Arizona Title 1, STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math) school.

99% of our students qualify to receive free lunch.

Most are English Language Learners, including refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico and the Middle East. All coming from low-income households, living in neighborhood apartments and trailer parks. School is often the first place my students are exposed to literacy, math and STEAM activities in English. They come from homes where education is often not a priority, making the initial readiness gap wider. They strive to do their best against the odds and are always excited to come to school and learn.

My Project

The materials chosen will engage my kindergarteners with hands on tactile experience. They'll have a better opportunity for working on task through inquisitive materials. For those students still learning the alphabet, they'll be able to punch the alphabet with play dough, stamp it on paper or use wikki stixs to make letters. Those with a better grasp can make sight words or word families. By keeping my students engaged will allow me to work in small groups with students.

By donating to my project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

The math number line activity chart will challenge and engage my kids daily. The 3D geometric shapes will allow students to touch, feel and see the dimensions throughout the year -- not just in the particular math unit. The scale will help me, the teacher, actually show them comparisons of weights with classroom objects. The matching games and daily math problems will engage in collaboration in small and whole group settings.
