This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 3rd-5th grade students are kind, unique, and full of energy to learn. They are a part of a special education classroom for students with communication disabilities such as autism. Our school is a part of the Ward 8 community in Washington, D.C., a low-income area. All of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Our school is on the district's list of the 40 schools with the highest needs.
Despite challenges at home and in the community, my students work hard to improve their academic skills and social skills through targeted interventions.
These interventions target the whole student, not just their academics. Communication and social skills are a huge part of our day because autism affects my students' ability to communicate. My students communicate through pictures, sign language, and assistive technology. These methods of communication also help my students achieve academically, as they read, write, and do math. At my school, we live by the motto, "Be the best!" and I believe my students are the best.
My Project
Every morning my students are engineers, engaging in project-based learning. Some days their challenge is to build a house using magnetic tiles or wooden blocks. Other days students have to create 3D shapes with Playdoh and toothpicks or interlocking blocks. This project-based learning helps my students make progress toward the Next Generation Science Engineering Design Standards such as planning and constructing a model that reflects a need or want (i.e. building a house for a family of five).
In order to continue this project-based learning, we need new supplies like magnetic tiles, styrofoam balls, and Zoob Builderz for the new year.
Many of our supplies have been used for years now and are broken. We need new supplies so we can continue building our creative design skills, problem-solving skills, and fine motor skills. This is my students' favorite part of the day and these supplies will help us to continue to engage in project-based learning!
