The students I will be working with are grades K-2. I am one of the Elementary Academic Interventionists for our school and steam lab teacher. We are just starting our steam lab at the school and need help in stocking it with scientific materials.
My students are in a school that is Title I which means we have a high percentage of the students, 88%, receiving free or reduced price lunches.
All the students come to school wanting to learn, especially science in our new steam lab. The students can't wait to show what they already know with their prior knowledge. However, we all know students learn better with hands on materials.
My Project
Our school is doing a steam lab and engineering is one of the components to STEAM. Our students need the opportunity to have materials that they can construct and create motion structures. These materials will be used by their imagination and creativity, while other times it maybe more intense and structured with a certain goal.
The students will be challenged to problem solve, critical thinking, and develop a wide range of skills.
The students that will get to use the motion kits will be kindergarten through fifth grade and this will be something that future grades can use.
The motion kit is designed to peek the student’s interest in building, creating, and understanding motion. The kit will also be geared to each grade level in being age appropriate for those students. Having this motion kit and board will also give me the opportunity to challenge more students that are highly developed with engineering skills. The materials will benefit many students for many years in engineering and learning about motion.
