Engineering Design

My students need 4 flip camcorders to record their projects for their engineering portfolios. Students will record their creations for analysis and presentations.

My Students

Middle school students are exploring the field of engineering by solving problems through the engineering design process. They need the ability to record their projects in order to analyze effectiveness of their products and to create a portfolio full of engineering successes.

The students are 7th and 8th graders who want to explore the field of engineering by taking a one year long Gateway to Technology class.

These are seventy dedicated students who love to problem solve using science, math, engineering and technology to do so. They will be creating a portfolio to present to the high school Project Lead the Way teachers, in order to continue their study in the field of engineering. This class gives them an overview of design and modeling, flight and space, electronics, and science of technology, including nanotechnology. Last year they all finished an automation and robotics class successfully in order to enroll in this class.

My Project

Students will learn some video taping skills, along with video editing skills. They will use the cameras to record their steps to the engineering design process, as a tool for project analysis, and for project presentations. Students will show off their skills as engineers to local High School teachers in order to continue on the engineering pathway set. They will also use the cameras for local competitions as an analysis tool for their own work as well as others. They will begin making a career portfolio of projects during their education.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are important to the education of students today.

Students taking this year-long Gateway to Technology class will be implementing all the disciplines above when applying the engineering design method to create their projects. The video cameras give them one more opportunity to record, step by step, the process they undergo to create their final project and to show off their success as a pre-engineer!
