The standards have been raised! My English Language Learners need to be reading more non-fiction text. My school does not have the funds to provide the resources. Providing my students with sets of books will allow me to teach them about history in an enjoyable way.
My students are from around the world (mostly refugees) who are eager to learn.
They attend an inner-city school that doesn't have the funds to provide the resources needed. The students love to read about real people and what happened in history. They also need help with new vocabulary and building the background behind the text.
My Project
New books are a must! To have sets of books allows me to read with the class text at their level and develop the background, vocabulary and history behind the text. This is vital for students developing in their English and literacy skills.
Specifically, I have ordered two levels of the Diary of Anne Frank because I teach both beginning and intermediate level ESL, an allegory of the Holocaust and a teacher's resource kit to go along with the book. In addition, I have requested books about Helen Keller and Harriet Tubman as well as the classic, Robin Hood for the beginning level classes. Lastly, I have asked for storage bins for the books to make them more accessible to the students and to help preserve their condition to last longer rather than getting lost on deep shelves and damaged.
The Common Core Standards require students to read more non-fiction text.
Our school doesn't have sets of books at their reading level that will meet this requirement. Please consider helping us to provide enjoyable text that will help them learn and at the same time meet the requirements of Common Core.
