Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This upcoming year, I will be a third-grade ESL self-contained teacher at an ACE elementary school. In Dallas ISD, ACE schools need significant academic improvement and opportunity to accelerate academic growth.
In addition to this, one-third of my students are self-reported homeless--this number might actually be bigger.
Since this percentage is so high, I want to go above and beyond to provide them with the best resources possible. I want to create a classroom students feel comfortable and at home.
My Project
An engaging whole group instruction starts with comfortable seating. My students are uncomfortable sitting on the cold floor. They keep asking if we can purchase a rug, but as of right now I do not have the funds to pay for this. In this project, I am requesting a rug among other classroom supplies.
Only five students out of the thirty students I have in my classroom brought school supplies.
My students need basic school supplies such as pencils and a sharpener. Our school is a title one school in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Dallas. About one-third of my students are self reported homeless.
School supplies should be the last thing my students have to worry about.
