My students are under credited and over aged who will age out of the school system. We are located in Queens, NY and many of the students take public transportation to school. We are the last chance most of them have to receive their high school diploma. Many of them come from low-income households or broken homes and have children of their own or have been in trouble with the law. The majority of our students really want to graduate and try very hard to attend school and complete the work.
My Project
Technology is not easy to come by in NYC schools. Students are given the priority when it comes to new computers, as it should be the school's priority to focus on the students' needs. However, teachers also need new tech in order to help develop the students' learning skills and provided the necessary lesson plans.
Teachers need new technology in order to develop engaging lessons and to connect to the students' technology during class.
Using an up-to-date laptop would enable me to connect to the smart-board and make interactive lessons that would give my students a chance to learn in a different way. Being able to use the smart-board in this manner, would open up so many lanes of teaching and ways to engage the students in a very positive and productive manner. This would also help cut down on the number of copies I need to make and amount of chart paper that I use in class throughout the day.
Having an up-to-date laptop would also enable me to take online courses to continue my professional development. I would be able to join online courses to further enhance my education and broaden my scope as an educator. There are so many amazing opportunities out there that can be accessed by a computer. Having the ability to connect to other educators and share experiences would be very beneficial to my professional development. My students would benefit from this because I would be able to share my new knowledge with them. My lessons would reflect all of the curriculum-based courses, classroom management webinars and literary resources I would partake in and observe. My lessons would include the information I would learn and therefore, benefit the classes I teach on many levels
