Engaging Students With Flexible Seating

Help me give my students stools and portable reclining seats in order for them to feel safe, comfortable, and engage them with learning in my classroom!

My Students

I am a fourth-grade teacher at a Title I school in Newport News, Virginia. At my school, we departmentalize, so all fourth-grade students use my classroom. We have a very diverse group of students who truly want to learn. They are students who truly do want to succeed; however, many do not have the best family life at home and education is not always fully supported. For a lot of our students, our classroom is the only safe space that they have.

Students need to be able to stay focused and motivated in order to achieve their dreams; in addition, they also need to feel safe and welcome in my classroom.

My students have the ability to achieve their dreams and to become leaders in their community; however, they need to be engaged and motivated in order to complete their very best work. When my students are engaged and feel safe, the possibilities are endless. I want all students that leave my classroom to know how much they are cared for and that they are capable of whatever they set their minds to.

My Project

My goal is for every single student to feel safe and welcome in my classroom. I want all my students to realize that they are capable of doing whatever they set their minds to. For many of my students, their education and school is not something that has ever been made a priority. I want to make school exciting and want for students to enjoy my class.

I want to instill a lifelong love of learning in all my students and show them that they can reach for the stars and achieve their dreams regardless of their background.

Flexible seating options help to make the classroom a welcoming environment. I plan to use the stools around my small group tables. The portable reclining picnic chairs will be perfect for students to use while completing independent work-- they will be able to take the chair to anywhere in the room and complete their work. With over 26 students per class, these flexible seating options will work with the limited space in my classroom. Not only will these seating options make the classroom welcoming, but it will also help to motivate all students and make sure they are engaged in learning in my classroom and will benefit all types of learners.
