Mrs. Gillespie from Columbus OH is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a document camera.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
"Begin with the End in Mind" is our class motto for our incoming HS freshmen. With a district graduation rate of 74%, the freshman team is trying to instill goals and dreams for all incoming students. The lack of technology in the classroom hinders this effort.
This is an Ohio inner city school.
Of the 1,000 students the ratios breakdown as follows: 85% classified as economically disadvantaged, 18% disabled, 62% Black, 35% White, 3% Hispanic or multi-racial. The school was built in 1952 and lacks the latest technology to ensure the students will be prepared for a global society. The urban community that surrounds this school is supportive of the school, and much pride is evident; however, due to the economic status of the residents, our building cannot afford the latest technology that would enable me as a teacher to narrow the gap between the disadvantaged and the advantaged in our society.
A document camera is an essential tool for today's classroom for it allows students a better view of the information needed to share with the class. It ends the students’ problems in trying to gain a better view of a demonstrated science experiment. It is also a great way to teach how important it is not to waste paper and how easily one can go green. No more copying 100’s of handouts. With a document camera, I would place the document below the camera and the image is now visible on the whiteboard where students could interact by using markers on the board allowing visual and tactile learners the needed stimulation. Other advantages of a document camera: no need to make costly transparencies for an overhead projector, immediate feedback of student work, and the demonstration of how to complete assignments. To recap: science demonstrations so all can see; go green and save paper; meet the needs of the visual, tactile, and auditory learners, ensuring all my students’ learning styles are met.
The impact of this project is that it helps narrow the gap between the advantaged and the disadvantaged in our society.
The disadvantaged do not have the needed tools for success. By narrowing the gap with something as simple as a document camera, you ensure that the future of these students is brighter and their dreams are a step closer. A document camera will engage students in the learning process, and when students make these connections, learning takes place.
