My 5th grade math students are very special to me! They are very diverse in their math abilities and about 65% are below grade level when they come to me. These students don’t have a lot of support at home to adequately practice the concepts taught in the classroom; however, through hard work and perseverance from the students and myself, they always leave as confident learners.
This year, I will have an inclusion math class that will have students with identified learning disabilities along with their non-disabled peers.
I am excited to see how each student will flourish and participate in this diverse learning community. I am confident that each student will be comfortable interacting with their peers, despite these learning disabilities because we as a classroom community, believe that all students can learn even if it requires a different method or a longer period of time!
In this project, I am requesting the PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program. If this project is funded, all of the fifth grade teachers at my school will have access to PowerMyLearning Connect where we can create personalized learning experiences to ignite our students' curiosity, collaborate with other teachers, perfect our teaching practice through targeted professional development, and the most important; engage families in the learning process.
This program is designed to differentiate instruction for all learners as student ownership is developed and family confidence is increased at home.
This is accomplished through homework assignments that are personalized on the Family Playlists. These assignments are mobile-friendly, multilingual, and increase the social-emotional learning of each student by giving them the opportunity to teach their newly learned concepts to a member of their family . The majority of our students do not have a support system at home to continue their learning from the classroom so we are hoping this program will help bridge that gap and over time increase student achievement in all areas: math, science, language arts, and social studies.
