Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families that struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
These novel sets will augment our classroom library and enable each student in my class to have a copy of the book that we read together in class. The novels The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park will enhance the reading skills of all students while also providing students opportunities to discuss the themes of perseverence, social strife, identity, freedom and confinement, home, creativity, animal rights, and hope.
Robert Ward asserted in his 2017 article, "The Advantages of Teaching Whole-Class Novels", "A sense of community and scholarly inclusion is created when students laugh, gasp, and weep in unison while reading the same engrossing grade-level novel." Students who read the same book and discuss the contents will benefit from a more lively and enriching classroom culture where ideas can be freely shared.
Students will keep a journal to record their thoughts and summarize the chapters that we read together in class. Since many of my students struggle with reading comprehension and writing, the practice of writing summaries and sharing their journal entries with peers will help them improve their writing skills and understanding of what they have read.
