As the third most diverse public high school in the country, my school is home to students, from all over the city, facing a variety of challenges every day. They are all eager to learn and prepare themselves for life after high school. For most, this means college preparation – but, for all, this signifies the need to be distinctive.
Standing out in a crowd of 2,400 students is challenging, but my students are shaping a future for themselves and our high school.
They may have different backgrounds, learning preferences, and life goals, but they are all here because they want to make something of themselves.
My students are involved in both their home and school communities. Many of them participate in after school activities and teams, such as sports, robotics, and leadership. However, all my students contribute meaningfully to our classroom. Collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and creativity are just some of the 21st century skills my students are developing every day. This is just the beginning of their preparedness for the real world.
My Project
Geometry is a branch of mathematics that relies heavily on ones' ability to visualize geometric figures. However, this is a skill that takes a great deal of time to learn and is often easier with physical models.
These manipulatives will create engaging learning sessions for my students that help them strengthen their mathematical skills.
For example, the three-dimensional figures will help my students visualize problems with volume, surface area, and cross sections.
In addition to visualizing figures, students need to know how to use algebra to prove geometric relationships. Currently, we use traditional dice and polyhedral dice to help us create and practice solving algebraic equations. The fraction dice would be a great addition to this engaging activity.
