This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are the Lee Hall Engineers. They are on track for success despite some fairly big challenges. We are a Title One school, meaning that we have a high percentage of children from low-income families, who are at high risk for failure. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
We are blessed with a very diverse group of students who are excited to come to school each day and eager to learn.
My kindergarten class is a collaborative kindergarten which means that we have both typical and special education students. The class consists of sixteen, typical children and eight children identified with special education needs.
We are located right outside Fort Eustis, so many of our students come from military households. This means that even our students who have two parents have spent much of their life in a single-parent household while their other parent was deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq or Korea. The majority of our students are African-American or Latino, and about twelve percent come from homes where a language other than English is spoken.
My Project
My kindergarten class, as well as our other three kindergartens, are embarking on a new reading program that will utilize four different books each month. We will focus on a new book each week. This is a step by step program that follows a progression of skills: predicting, retelling, making connections, giving opinions and inferring.
Help our emergent readers develop reading comprehension skills through engagement with these carefully selected books.
They will help them learn by integrating art, music and kinesthetic activities as they explore good literature.
We will use our new materials in both large and small group settings.
