Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students line up and wait to shake my hand to start the day, we come into class at take out our independent reading books to have sustained silent reading for 20 minutes. The peaceful and calm silence that takes over the room is moving, especially since it is solely because of books.

They are wonderful 7th and 8th graders who vary in everything from physical appearance to personal interests.

The variety and range of books needed to engaged these students is huge. Our school is a charter school that is extremely interested in preparing our middle school students to get a great education, while exploring who they are and how they can connect to their world.

My Project

The books that my students will receive will absolutely help my students in their interest and love for reading. Some students who have already read books I have suggested for them have finished the books in record time and asked for different ones. The kids that never thought they liked reading are finding enjoyment in the 20 minutes of independent reading each day and the novels that they never knew existed. However, our class does not have enough engaging, modern novels for the 120 kids that pass through my English class each day, especially if they want to take them home at night. An engaging classroom library would completely change the boring outlook on books that these students have.

The students will have opportunities to change their outlook on books and reading and find engaging books that will open all sorts of doors for them.

I was introduced to a book as a 4th grader that changed my whole outlook on reading and now am an avid reader and was since that one book that a teacher gave me. I have already seen that happen to a couple of my students with the books I have provided for them but I need more for the massive amounts of students that need guidance.
