I work in a school where most of the students receive free/reduced price lunch. We have a high ELL (English Language Learners) and special education population. Many of the students at my school have difficult home situations, and we are able to give them the consistency and support they need at school.
I am fortunate to have 18 enthusiastic 3rd graders, who greet me every day with a hug and a smile, despite their challenges happening at home.
As a teacher, I want to do everything I can to help my students succeed this year, and throughout their lives.
My Project
My students need books about social emotional learning to help them learn about empathy, choosing kindness, and self-regulation. Many of these skills are usually learned at home first. Most of my students do not have the proper social skills they need to succeed. The social emotional books will help guide lessons on every day problems these student's go through.
My students deserve to have a library full of books they can relate to, can help them problem solve, and are at their reading level.
I have put a lot of my own money into building my classroom library, but am asking for assistance to add both fiction and non-fiction leveled books to our classroom. This will ensure the student's have books to read that are at their level.
Along with all of these books, another skill my student's are working on is making responsible decisions. By having headphones to help reduce noise, they can use these to have quiet time when they are feeling frustrated, and are not able to physically leave the classroom. This will help a number of my student's that are working on controlling anger and frustration.
