Help me give my students sets of books for our guided reading lessons. These books are engaging, represent different cultures, and teach important messages.
My class has 22 energetic and enthusiastic learners. We are an urban public school with many of our students receiving free or reduced price lunch. We come from many different backgrounds, and all bring something different and unique to share with the group.
We learn in a variety of ways, through whole class instruction, small group instruction, reading books aloud, exploration and more!
One of our favorite times in the day is reading. Independent reading and guided reading is a precious time for many of my students that they look forward to each day.
My Project
Our school currently has a book room with a selection of sets of books for guided reading. However many sets are incomplete and they are shared between many teachers so they are often not available. Also, many of the books are not engaging and do not represent a variety of cultures. We need books that are readily available, and get students excited about reading!
These books will pique my students interests, help them feel like they are represented in literature, and help foster a love of reading.
They were selected based on my students' instructional reading levels and are about topics I think they will be interested in. I will use these books in my guided reading lessons, where I teach reading strategies using books at the student's levels to a small group of students at a time. This is not only a time to teach new strategies, but a time to share our love of reading and books! It is also important that my students see people of different cultures represented in their reading.
