Engaging Beginning Readers in a Multi-sensory Approach.
Help me give my students opportunities for multi-sensory learning. My students need wobble cushions, a listening center, read along stories, & touch and read phonics cards to help give them audio & visual representations of reading materials.
We are a very rural country school nestled between beautiful mountains and farmland in Southern Oregon. It is not uncommon to see goats, deer, lizards and turkeys on our campus. Our students are from very diverse backgrounds. We have a low socioeconomic population and 100% of our students receive a free lunch. We have a school garden, and all students receive a fresh fruit or vegetable snack every day.
My classroom is a self-contained special education classroom.
It is made up of unique students with moderate disabilities. My students benefit from incorporating different teaching styles. We do a lot of hands-on learning and incorporate lots of sensory activities. It's so rewarding to see my students excited when they gain skills and learn new concepts!
Our students are dependent upon finding a safe and secure environment here in which they are able to learn. We make it a priority to ensure that our students are provided with the essentials they need to be successful. Meeting their mental, physical, emotional, social and academic needs is a constant concern and focus for our staff. We have limited resources with which to accomplish these important goals.
My Project
My students learn best using multiple modalities, hands-on instruction, and multi-sensory activities. They struggle with even the most basic concepts. It is so rewarding to see them acquire new skills, because they work so hard! Wobble cushions will help my students be able to control their bodies, so they can focus on learning. A listening station, along with read-along books will give my students an audio & visual representation of reading material. The touch and read phonics cards will help slow my students down enough to focus on each sound in the word, thus helping to build their reading skills.
