Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from 20 different countries and represent 6 different languages. They come to the U.S. for a variety of reasons but in the classroom they come for one reason only, to learn. My students are some of the hardest working students within the building. They not only need to learn the content, but they also need to learn the English language as well.
This high school is a Title I school with the majority of students receiving free lunch, and many will be the first in their families to attend college.
I service students with a wide range of needs, from special education to literacy lessons for those who did not have a formal education in their home countries. They are open-minded and have embraced students from cultures other than their own. I am blown away by their open-mindedness and teamwork they show on a day to day basis.
My Project
I am looking to get 3 C-Pens to assist my newcomer ELs with reading the text in their classes. These pens will allow students to scan their books or worksheets, and hear unfamiliar words and have the words translated into Spanish or French. These pens work as a portable dictionary that scans words on demand, reads text aloud, and of course, translates.
Currently, students who are at beginner level ESL are disengaged in class because they cannot understand the words on the paper, these pens will remove that barrier to learning.
As I am unable to be with all my students throughout the day, these tools will be an incredible asset to allow students to regain the agency needed for them to take ownership of their learning. Last year when I introduced Audiobooks to my level 1 students, their engagement with their books went up, I believe this tool will also drive motivation.
