Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a part of the neighborhood that has high poverty and where many of my students and their families reside. The COVID pandemic and the resulting effects have continued to negatively impact our student's community.

My students are a special group of students, our classroom consist of all minority students.

Getting our students back fulltime into the classroom and adjusting them to learning in a physical setting has been a challenge. Our students are currently in the process of learning how to interact with one another in a healthy and positive manner. The year and a half of remote learning had a negative impact on the close relationship students had with one another and following a structured schedule. Hence, we are slowly making progress as a class on gaining back those essential skills all students should possess.

My Project

Modeling and showing our students exemplar work is one of our main jobs as an educator. Although my co-teacher and I utilize google slides to show our students exemplary work, it does not satisfy all of the academic needs in our classroom. For example, in writing, when we need to model how to revise work, we are unable to show the "act of revising" directly on the Smart Board. Although we are able to verbally inform students where a revision would happen, or show them an exemplar via Google Slides or a PDF, modeling the "act of revising" via a document camera is powerful. Similarly, in our math congress activities or inquiry lessons, a document camera is very useful when presenting student work. Currently, if students present their work, the class has a hard time staying focused on the presenter's solutions unless it is passed over to a chart paper.

The donations to this project will allow for teacher modeling and the sharing of student work to be engaging and academically impactful.

The additional materials requested, such as dry erase markers and transparency paper, will also be used in conjunction with the document camera. Most importantly, it is very difficult to ask of a class of over 20 students to focus on a presenter's math solution or writing product completed on a 8.5 x11 inch paper. My co-teacher and I need your support to make the sharing of student work and modeling engaging and instant!
