Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but all come from a low-income community in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Many are from single-parent homes, and unfortunately some of them are in between housing arrangements/living in transitional housing. My school serves grades K-5, and all students qualify for free meals. We have a high percentage of students who come from bilingual homes, or who have very recently arrived in the U.S. As a community school, we serve all families through various evening programs and educational opportunities.
My Project
Our current classroom library is anything BUT current. The collection of books in my room are a mish-mash of raggedy texts with pages falling out, most of them over 30 years old that I pilfered from the classrooms of retired teachers. The stories themselves are not relevant to kids in this generation, as they were written in the 70's and 80's.
My students deserve a classroom library that engages them and relates to their lives.
The majority of children at my school do not have access to books at home. They often come to me privately to ask for books to borrow in order to complete their reading homework. Sadly a classroom library is not funded by our school district. Teachers within our district are expected to purchase supplies from our own wallets. Because of this, my students are limited to a poor selection of used, damaged books. My heart breaks when their eyes light up at the sight of a book I had to tape back together again.
New and culturally RELEVANT books would fill their hearts with joy, and change their lives.
