One specific moment stands out: I had a student come to my office in a state of crisis, unable to verbalize what was wrong. Because of your donation, I was able to offer them a snack and a quiet moment. That simple act met a basic need that helped regulate their nervous system, allowing them to calm down, open up about what was happening, and eventually return to class ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources as a vital tool for building rapport and removing barriers to attendance and focus. Food insecurity often creates hidden anxiety that manifests as behavioral issues or absenteeism. By having these snacks available for students during the day—and to send home with families who are struggling—we are sending a powerful message: \"You are safe here, and your needs matter.\" The \"hangry\" outbursts have decreased, replaced by students who feel supported and are more willing to engage in counseling and social-emotional work because their physiological needs are being met.\r\n\r\nNow that we have addressed this fundamental need, we can move from \"survival mode\" to growth. With their \"tanks full,\" my students are better able to focus on the skills we work on together, such as conflict resolution, managing anxiety, or building peer relationships. They have become an essential visual and organizational tool during small group and whole-group ELA lessons. Because the charts are interactive and easily accessible to students, they help make foundational literacy concepts—like letter-sound correspondence, blending, segmenting, and sight word recognition—both hands-on and engaging.\r\n\r\nDuring phonemic awareness and phonics instruction, I use the pocket charts to model sound manipulation with picture cards and letter tiles. Students can physically move cards to isolate, blend, or substitute sounds, which supports multi-sensory learning and reinforces skills taught in our Heggerty and Benchmark lessons. The charts also help students visually see word patterns when sorting CVC words, rhyming pairs, and high-frequency words.
