This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a low-income school district. Every year, there seems to be more cuts to the budget. These cuts affect the resources we have to effectively work to a lower and lower amount. I have little money to buy basic classroom supplies for these students. Our students strive to succeed without the basic supplies.
My Project
I teach 8th grade physical science. During our energy unit, I have my students create an energy transformation poster. The goal of the project is to have the students trace the source of their electrical energy through a renewable and non-renewable energy source. My students do not think about where their electricity comes from. They are required to think of all of the steps that are necessary to enable them to run their cell phones, electronic games, and television. We are so reliant upon electricity, yet there is a disconnect as to where and how this important resource comes into our homes.
I want my students to succeed and excel in their class work.
To do this, they need supplies such as poster boards. Most school districts will ask students to bring in supplies. I just can't do this due to the low-income status of the district.
