Energy for Lost COVID Credits

Help me give my students energy (snacks) for those who are attempting to recover lost credits due to COVID.

My Students

I teach Biology, College Credit Anatomy & Physiology, Intro to Engineering, and VEX Robotics. I also run after school STEM programs for underrepresented populations within my high school. My classes are all very hands-on and focus around real-world problems and phenomena.

I want my students to be problem solvers, not fact repeaters.

To accomplish this goal, I plan my lessons around higher-level thinking skills and give students the opportunity to "dig into" content. This strategy requires a wide range of tools, models, and materials for labs and learning.

My students range from 9th - 12th graders. We are a farming community and there is a high level of poverty. Our Free and Reduced Lunch rate is 97%. Many of my students struggle to have dreams and goals for their future. They also struggle with overcoming obstacles. This is why I love teaching the Engineering and Robotics classes. It demands that students have grit. Students in these classes go through a transition of "I can't" to " that didn't work so let's try this" to "can we make it even better?" They have tremendous growth in their confidence, work ethic, and belief in themselves.

My Project

I am teaching a credit recovery course for Juniors and Seniors this next term. It is designed to help students who struggled during COVID distance learning recoup credits they need for graduation.

These students have had a hard few years and often didn't have the support to be successful during distance learning - I want to make sure they have everything they need to regain that lost learning.

I would like to be able to offer my students a snack each Friday (This is our lowest attendance day). This project will supply a snack for each student for each Friday of the 18 weeks that the course will run.

Hopefully, with food in their bellies, they will be ready to tackle their credit recovery and conquer it!
