My students consist of approximately 140, 7th through 12th graders. Our district is currently in the financial watch, and there are no finances to provide students with much more than the bare minimum, so my students’ faces light up when they get an above and beyond project opportunity.
Our students lack the opportunities to engage in project-based, authentic learning that fosters independent thinking and creativity.
In addition, our economically disadvantaged students with disabilities are consistently underperforming their peers. As a teacher serving in a low-income school district with a higher than average ratio of students with disabilities, it has become necessary to find innovative ways to engage students in learning. Our goal is to increase their engagement in school and content and foster a deeper level of thinking to give them the skills to be successful when they graduate.
My Project
We are slowly building our STEM program at our school, and one of the items we are missing to power our classroom are batteries. Many of our projects and STEM kits, such as the Little Bits kits, require batteries. This project provides rechargeable batteries for our classroom.
The rechargeable batteries will not only keep our classroom projects energized and working, but also be kinder to the earth in being rechargeable and reusable.
The one hour charger has a temperature monitor will allow me to the batteries both quickly and safely, which are both important to keep our classroom moving.
