Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title One school where the vast majority of our students receive free breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Located in the middle of Richmond (CA), our school is part a vibrant community that faces many obstacles. Our hallways and common areas are filled with industrious activity, compassion, and laughter.
The students in my class are passionate and driven in the face of a challenging world.
More than 90% of the students at our school are bilingual and many are newcomers to the United States. They are working diligently to improve their English literacy, and many are close to getting reclassified (a process through which they "graduate" from their status as an English language learner and are registered as fluent in English). During school, my students are resilient in their efforts to improve their academic English skills; many also attend an after school program where they spend more time honing their reading and writing skills.
On the weekends, many students in my class help their parents at their jobs and take on responsibilities at home. I am inspired by the work ethic of my students and the kindness with which they treat one another.
My Project
As we near the end of the school year, Our room is in need of some essentials, and a treat. We need new dry erase markers for students to use on their whiteboards during small group instructional time. One student had her backpack stolen when her family's car was robbed and she needs a way to carry her supplies to school. After some consideration, she has decided she wants a canvas tote bag, so we have found that she liked together.
Finally, I wanted to give each student a small gift at the end of the year so they can remember our time together.
I have decided that it would be a nice memento to have a photo of themselves, in a frame, with a note on the back of the photo. I have requested frames for my students.
