Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I funded school in a small, farming town. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Forty percent of our students are English learners. Although we are located in an older neighborhood, it is a tight-knit community with lots of family support.
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -William Butler Yeats
My students come to the library excited to find that just right book to read. They particularly enjoy fun and familiar series such as The Four Food Groups and We Don't Eat our Classmates. Like most school libraries, funds are limited so we tend to have only one copy of each title. Students desperately want to read these books, but oftentimes, they have to wait for months before a copy becomes available. After waiting and waiting and waiting, my students are naturally disappointed. Oftentimes, they lose their excitement for reading and just select books half-heartedly off the shelves.
This project is for The Four Food Groups series by Jory John, the We Don't Eat Our Classmates series by Ryan Higgins, and The Wild Robot series by Peter Brown. I added three biographies on famous entertainers and sports figures (Taylor Swift, Leo Messi, and Beyonce). Lastly, included in this project are labels to label the books with our school's name and address (in case they get lost) and a Spirograph Set to replace the one we currently have which is missing parts.
My students will be so excited to see these new books in our library!
